The mission of the CCCS is to promote and enhance Critical Care Medicine in Canada. The CCCS espouses the philosophy of collaborative multidisciplinary practice to promote research, education and patient care in Critical Care Medicine.
The Canadian Critical Care Society is the National Specialty Society (affiliated with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada) that represents Adult and Paediatric Critical Care Medicine physicians in Canada. The practice of Critical Care Medicine in Canada is multidisciplinary and CCCS members hold base specialty certification in Anaesthesia, Medicine, Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine or Surgery.
The
CCCS is involved in Critical Care Medicine education in association with the
Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and in CCM research with
the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group. Scientific oral and poster presentations
and symposia are held annually, usually in conjunction with the Royal College
of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
The CCCS has developed position papers on current issues facing practicing Canadian CCM MDs, in the areas of Withdrawal and Withholding of Life Support and Physician Resources and Workload in Critical Care Units. Future projects include the development of national standards for the delivery of CCM in academic and community centres.
