TERMS OF REFERENCE   

Mission statement

To serve as a resource to Canadian physicians on ethical issues of relevance to critical care and to promote the highest ethical standard of care for critically ill patients through education, research and advocacy.

Purpose

The Ethical Affairs Committee provides oversight for the Canadian Critical Care Society’s professional activities related to health ethics and provides guidance to membership on ethical issues of relevance to critical care in the Canadian context.

Goals

1. To monitor, review and provide recommendations regarding ethical issues relevant to the field of critical care in a Canadian context

2. To advocate on behalf of the general membership with respect to issues of health ethics relevant to the field of critical care, including issues of interest to regional and specialty interests

3. To develop and promote educational resources in health ethics pertinent to critical care in the Canadian context

4. To serve as a resource for Canadian intensivists with respect to ethical issues arising in critical care medicine

5. To support and endorse Canadian research activities in critical care ethics

6. To identify and build partnerships with relevant national and international organizations to advance critical care ethics in Canada

7. To manage potential conflict of interest between the Society and its partners, funding sources and other parties

About the Association

The Canadian Critical Care Society (CCCS) is the National Specialty Society, representing Adult and Paediatric Critical Care Medicine physicians in Canada. The practice of Critical Care Medicine in Canada is multidisciplinary and CCCS members hold base specialty certification in anaesthesia, medicine, paediatrics, emergency medicine or surgery and some surgical subspecialties such as cardiac surgery and neurosurgery.
